January 2008- I've been meaning to post this for a long time: If you have Google Earth, type in these coordinates: 50 0' 38.20 N, 110 6'48.32 W
It's just over the Canadian border above Montana. I'll let it be a surprise, but it's cool and worth checking out.
I attended a two day/ten hour instructor seminar at my school. Good times.
February 2008- I was sick on my birthday. I still had fun though.
I helped with a women's self-defense class. Kind of weird to have to push
women I didn't even know up against the wall and choke them...
Started a painting. This time with oils. It takes so long to dry,
but I love this. I put on my iPod and zone out.
Got my Radiohead ticket.
I realized I had only 3% of my hard drive available after years of Photoshop projects and animations and stuff,
so I've had to transfer files to a 500 Gig external hard drive.
I now no longer have any hand in the Providence Cafe website, so if it doesn't look as cool, you know why.
I finally rode the Lynx light rail line. It was pretty cool actually. My old pal Lisa from back in the day came to visit and rode it with me.
March 2008- I got to go skiing this year! Wendi joined me, and we had a blast on Sugar Mountain.
At first I was a bit cautious, what with the knee surgery last year, but by the end of the day I was back again, zipping down the slopes.
The painting is looking really good; I just wish I had more time for it. And there's a definite learning curve with the oils. A lot of what I've been doing is experimental stuff
(even mixing salt with the paint to make the sand look more real). It should be done by the end of April, and I'll post a picture here (does anyone even read these monthly updates??)
The thing is though, all the time spent hunched over painting the canvas has kept me from working out and stretching. I now see that between paintings, I'll have to work hard to get back into shape.
I was able to see Barack Obama speak. I couldn't stay for the Q&A afterward though. He's an awesome speaker, and it left me strongly looking at my life and what I'm doing to make this a better world.
I had just written out my life's mission statement two days before, so it was good timing.
Then, two days later, I JUST missed meeting Bill Clinton by about 40 seconds! That bothered me all day and into the night.
April 2008- I did far better this year tax wise than in years past.
I mean, I actually got a check in the mail! That hasn't happened in many years. True, it was only a check for
ten dollars, but it was a check mailed to me nonetheless.
Attended a "close quarters combat" seminar.
Went to see the band Ministry, as they are retiring. I admit, I mostly went to get my mosh pit fix. I was sore for three days. :)
I was introduced to a new person at work as "This is Scott. He's almost 40, but he still hangs out in mosh pits." Damn straight.
And that painting... yeah... one day I hope to have time to finish it.
May 2008- I went to see Radiohead. I didn't anticipate half of Charlotte
to be attending, so I didn't leave until around 7 something (was waiting for my friend Lisa to get off work [different Lisa], had to eat, didn't care about the opening band, etc).
We were in concert traffic for OVER AN HOUR trying to get in. When we walked through the gate, I made a mental note of the song, and later, at home, found the set list online.
We walked in during the middle of the 4th song! BUT... through the magic of modern technology, I was able to see those songs (as well as the ones I saw in person)
on Youtube. If you're curious, just type "Radiohead Charlotte" into the search field, and there you are.
I can assure you I will not be late to see The Cure next month.
I made the logo for my buddy Shannon's new catering company.
June 2008- I wasn't late seeing The Cure (my third time).
I was able to get up to the stage!
They played for three hours. I recorded some of it with my friend Krystal's Palm Pilot (which in a way redeems her brother Dave [sort of] for
handing me an empty camera many years ago when I went backstage to meet Duran Duran). This concert was a bit different from others I've seen in two ways:
They didn't play "A Forest", and even stranger - they didn't have any keyboards! The keyboard parts were played by guitar, which didn't sound bad, just - different.
This concert can be found on Youtube as well. I saw the back of my head in one of the posts!
I got another awesome massage from Tammy and I saw William's play (that he got "well-muscled" for). Went to see my buddy Keith's grappling tournamnet. He won a medal, the big belt, and $500 cash, among other things.
I had a bit of down time between jobs, so I read the book "Eat Pray Love". Admittedly kind of a chick book, but you know me -
I'm a butch lesbian in a man's body.
And, since this is June, I've been going to Pops In The Park. And I've already gotten some swim time in this summer.
I advanced another belt rank in Jiu Jitsu.
R.I.P. Stan Winston and George Carlin.
July 2008- The 4th of July I went to Shannon's neighborhood bbq party. No thumb burn for me this year from lighting fireworks.
I did some grip work on a CPI commercial for a week. Always cool to see all the behind the scenes happenings that go into making something like that.
I got to go horseback riding, thanks to Ashley. It had been a long time. After that we played some of her videogames and then sparred and grappled out in the yard in the rain. Good times.
My girl Ashley (a different Ashley - I know 3 of them!) had a milestone birthday. She's my adopted sister
(and we make a point to meet every Sunday for coffee).
I went to Atlanta for Bryan's birthday, to see Rush, and to meet some friends in the city.
PJ went with me. It was my 7th time seeing Rush, Bryan's 13th, and PJ's 16th.
As we drove to the show, it was raining with hurricane proportions. Lots of lightning, signs down,
traffic lights out, etc. None of us even commented that it would stop us from seeing the show (we had lawn tickets).
As soon as we parked, the rain stopped! The show was awesome! In fact, Rush is the dictionary definition of the word awesome.
As we were walking out, still euphoric from the show, some random guy leaned into us and said "Geddy Lee sounds like a queer!"
After some debate amongst the three of us, we decided he's in his own personal hell already, and we let him live.
I've been going to yoga classes whenever my schedule permits (which unfortunately isn't often).
There's a heater in each corner of the room, and after an hour and a half, I'm dripping with sweat.
It's been excellent for increasing my flexibility and balance.
Sadly, a good friend of mine - Skip - passed away. His death and funeral service have had me really rethinking my life and it's trajectory.
I'm deeply saddened and will miss him much.
August 2008- I was a zombie (one of about 15) in a short
film my buddy Chris made (way out in Troy N.C.) for a George Romero contest. Thanks Ashley (also a zombie) for joining me and keeping me company
and being my drinking buddy while we waited.
Here's a link to my buddy Ariel's website.
September 2008- If nothing else, I know that Earl is reading these monthly updates. :)
I had the opportunity to be present on a number of occasions on the set of a movie.
I got to hang out with the actors and I was there
the night they were filming all the exploding blood squibs, from the scenes where people get shot.
Many thanks to Mark and William for letting me do that.
I came home late one night around 2:30 to find a guy lurking in my driveway. He wasn't holding anything, and
started walking away as soon as I pulled in and my headlights hit him. I walked along right next to him and tilted my head
into his menacingly and asked in a joking and condescending way "What are ya doin'?."
He replied "Wrong driveway." To which I added "Yeah... wrong driveway." I stopped at the edge of the driveway and stood
there watching him walk down the street. I wasn't sure what to do exactly, as he hadn't actually stolen anything. He looked back a couple times to see that I was
still standing there watching him. As he rounded the corner, I decided to go after him. Long story short,
I called 911 and gave the description and said that I was following the guy to give his location as the police arrive (to which the 911
operator stated that I shouldn't do that, but if I do continue, not to engage him physically). The guy I was following heard
my voice as I spoke and saw that I was now closing in on him, so he rounded yet another corner, and when I ran to catch up,
he had disappeared into the dark of night. I lost him since I waited a full minute to follow him. My neighbor told me later
that the same guy was on his front porch recently.
I rode a mechanical bull at Coyote Joe's. It started out fun, and then as the intensity increased, the fun was replaced by
ball busting/hand breaking pain. But I stayed on longer than anyone else I saw that night
(even though it was my first time), and I'm glad I did it.
I worked 3 days on a few more CPI Security commercials. I dig that stuff.
Here are two of the four:
Commercial one
Commercial two
October 2008-
Went to the screening at (The Actor's Theater) of my talented, up and coming movie-making friend Chris Baker's "Zombie Hunters",
in which I had a brief scene. I was listed in the credits as "bald zombie". There were so many people both
at the theater and/or listed in the credits of the various movies that I knew, and that I had no idea they were also
involved in the film contest (including a guy from my martial arts school!)
It never ceases to amaze me how interconnected this city is!
I've been busy working on the logos for two new businesses.
Helped with another free self defense class. Most of the techniques were for if a guy has already pushed
the woman to the ground, and is now about to rape her.
At one point a girl laughed and said to me "I feel like we should do coffee first." It felt good to help empower some women that day.
I attended Shannon's annual pumpkin carving party (of course).
Here are my pumpkins this year.
As I was driving to the party, I saw a big male deer bounding down Hawthorne.
I did a quick u-turn as I grabbed my camera,
jumped out of my vehicle and went in search of him -
looking for footprints, etc. He was so fast, and I had to take my eyes off him to make the u-turn, and I lost him.
November 2008- I got my green belt in Jiu Jitsu,
and also attended a 4 hour Jeet Kune Do seminar.
I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to vote on Election Day, so I voted on the last day of early voting.
I originally wasn't going to even vote at all, as I wasn't a big fan of either candidate,
but I felt it was my duty as an American citizen. Sooo, having said that, after not planning to vote at all,
I wound up waiting in line for six hours to vote!
And the guy I voted for didn't even win (as I knew he wouldn't, but voted anyway).
I wasn't able to work that night as a result, and missed out on a big money making night. Oh well.
I finally went to San Francisco to visit my buddy Earl (as well as a couple other friends out there).
San Francisco has now become my favorite city.
If it wasn't so expensive, I'd already be taking steps to move there. It was good to catch up with
Earl, James, and Jenny (many thanks to all of you). I was also supposed to meet up with Travis,
but due to a schedule change,
I only ended up communicating with by him by phone.
Six days wasn't enough time to see and do all that's available out there, and I plan to return.
One of the hi-lites of my trip was the private tour I got of Phill Tippett Studios (thanks James!)
Earl, thanks for everything - you're a great friend!
After an early morning yoga session at Yoga One, I spent Thanksgiving with some old friends I used to work with years ago at LaVecchia's.
It was a bit of an international gathering -
there were people from the U.S., Britain, South Africa, and Sweden.   Lots of food, drink, games, and a great time all around.
Thanks to Christy and Ben for sharing their home with me.
I've been busy working on a few projects:
A business card design for a friend.
A logo design for a friend's girlfriend.
A birthday animation for Margaret.
December 2008- I went skiing at
Beech Mountain with Wendi and Kristina. (photos soon to follow - I used a disposable camera)
I was originally planning on snow boarding, but due to various reasons, I made the last second decision to ski.
On the way up the mountain, we stopped at a combination general store/restaurant/ski equipment place so that
I could buy new ski goggles. In there was a sweet little black cat which I spent a little time with
petting before
finding the afore mentioned goggles downstairs. Three minutes after I went downstairs,
Wendi came up to me with her hand bleeding, cursing the cat upstairs. I guess it just didn't like her.
The mountain seemed colder than usual for this time of year. Fortunately, layers of clothes
and Jägermeister did the trick. The entire day and night was overflowing with opportunities to respond with
"That's what she said!", as well as quoting some random song we heard on the radio as we arrived, with the chorus
"Do you wanna do it?!" . And the skis needed to be waxed, which led to jokes about
Kristina needing a waxing (Wendi brought her own skis). When we were finally ready to call it a day,
I had to go back for just one more run down the mountain by myself at break neck speed.
I'd been skiing a bit slower all day than my normal pace, so as not to lose the girls,
and I wanted to get a fast run in before I left. Have I ever mentioned I love skiing? :)
As I do every year, I drove down to Atlanta to be with Bryan and his family for Christmas.
Awesome food and drink as always.
I got to spend some time with my old pals Hope and Lisa. I've hung out
with them on rare occasions before separately the past couple years,
but the three of us hadn't hung out together in 20 years. Good times.
R.I.P Bettie Page.
carried over (again):
home defense! (because it's cool)

Stay tuned for even more excitement yet to come...
(Can you stand it?!)
