Drunk superhero

January 2009-   I added 30 pounds to my weight set, hoping it will help me bulk up a bit.
I started reading an excellent novel called Shantaram.   It's largely based on real life events of the author Gregory David Roberts.   It's now being made into a movie starring Johnny Depp.
I made a painting for my neice Alexa's 5th birthday.

February 2009- I turned 40.   I started the day with an hour and a half of hot yoga.   Then I visited with my long time friend Pete who I've known since 1989.   Then I met up with my good friend and massage therapist Tammy for an awesome 2 hour massage (she even gave me lots of chocolate for my birthday).   My Charlotte "adopted parents" took me to dinner, and then I saw Slumdog Millionaire.   I appreciate all the many phone calls, cards, emails, and Facebook birthday wishes.
My dear long time friend and fellow artist Jim Royal passed away early this month.   I can still hear his voice and laughter in my head.
I sold the entertainment center I had for almost a decade, and bought a new smaller one that matches my other furniture.
Local singing legend Charles Hairston passed away from his battle with cancer.   For those who, for whatever reason, might not know who he was, Charles was the singer for The Monday Night All-Stars, who performed at The Double Door forever.   I attended the memorial service held at Neighborhood Theatre.   It was quite a turn out.   In addition to the stories told about him (like his big afro and lime green suit he wore in the 70's), they played films and videos of him performing as well.

March 2009- The most noteworthy aspect of this month was getting to meet and talk to Ani DiFranco.   I'd been wanting to meet her for over a decade.   She told me she really doesn't like her picture taken, so no photo will accompany this.   I wrote a blog about the meeting on both Myspace and facebook.   I've started a second blog too, regarding the concert itself, and seeing Ani afterward.
Are you familiar with Pandora Radio?   It's a free internet radio station that "learns" what kind of music you like and don't like.   Look into it.
Also noteworthy is that I'm now officially no longer single.   Margaret will be returning home from Asia in April, and we've decided it just makes sense to be together.   I haven't had a serious girlfriend in about 5 and a half years, but I'm looking forward to this new beginning.

July 2009- "What happened to April, May and June?" you ask?   Well, I've been enjoying my time with Margaret, now that she's back in the U.S.   We sanded and refinished her floors (NOT recommended).   We traveled to Rochester, New York to see my family, and then to Ocean City, New Jersey to see hers.   This trip also included a day trip to Philadelphia, and a day at Six Flags.   This month, we visited her brother and his wife in Morehead City, North Carolina (Atlantic Beach).
In early April, I went down to Columbia, South Carolina to attend a Fair tax rally.   Neil Boortz and Mike Huckabee were the key speakers.
Also in April, sadly, McIntosh's closed the doors.   The downward spiral of the economy finally took its toll.   This was not only the best restaurant job I ever had, it was the best job, period, that I ever had.   Now I'm employed at Blue.   I'm grateful to be employed again, but I'm motivated to get on with a career outside of restaurants.
Apart from that, I've been working on improving my chess game, and also slowly working toward "enlightenment" (I suggest reading books by David Deida and Dr. David Hawkins).
As of this point (July), of all the summer time movies I've seen, "Star Trek" is definitely the best one.
But you already knew that.
I want to comment a bit on the passings of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett.   Obviously many people felt the need to remark on Michael's possible questionable involvement with kids.   I wasn't there; and I'm not here to judge.   What I want to write about is his creative legacy.   I mean, whether or not the guy's music was your taste or not, he made one hell of an impact on the music world, beginning from the age of Five.   He performed alongside Paul McCartney, Eddie Van Halen, and Slash, to name a few.   He was a pioneer- being one of the very first to use music video as something more than just a band onstage, with the video for "Thriller", (not to mention, he had Vincent Price add vocals).   He sold an estimated 750 million records worldwide, released 13 No.1 singles and became one of a handful of artists to be inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Guinness Book of World Records recognized Jackson as the Most Successful Entertainer of All Time and "Thriller" as the Biggest Selling Album of All Time. He won 13 Grammy Awards and received the American Music Award's Artist of the Century Award. And what can I even say about his unique dancing style?   His Apollo Theatre performance of "Billie Jean" is mesmerizing.   I remember when Thriller first came out and how everyone went crazy about it.   I'd see people walking down the street with the jacket from "Beat It", and kids would bring the record to school just to show off that they owned it.   And who doesn't smile and move their head when "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" comes on?   I could go on for a full page, but I'll just end by saying it's sad and tragic that he succumbed to such pain and was never happy with the way he looked, and that his suffering overshadowed his genius, sadly.
As for Farrah, she was my very first crush when she played the role of Jill on Charlie's Angels.   I remember my mom sending me to the store at age 8 one day to buy some milk.   Instead, I used that five dollar bill to buy as many packs of Charlie's Angels cards as I could, just to collect photos of Farrah (needless to say, that didn't go over well!)   And then there's the famous poster with the red swim suit, which adorned my bed room wall.   She and I shared the same birthday as well - February 2nd.
